Rachel Z. Baumann
Licensed Therapist & Nationally Certified School Psychologist in Connecticut

We often go through life pretending or wishing that our feelings don’t matter. This makes a lot of sense: our emotions can be messy. They can scare us. We know from research that when we deny our emotions, we increase our pain, leading to psychological suffering. How we avoid pain — for example, re-experiencing pain from the past, judging and criticizing ourselves, comparing ourselves to others, using drugs and alcohol as a distraction — often provides relief in the short term, but makes life worse in the long term.

How can our work together help? As a therapist, I utilize cutting-edge and research-based therapy interventions to help you, your child, or your family understand and respond more effectively to your thoughts, emotions, and challenges. I am dedicated to maintaining a trauma-informed, culturally aware, and neuro-affirming framework to develop individualized treatment plans.

Therapy with Compassion, Patience, and No Judgment

I have been providing counseling for more than 10 years and am intensively trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Prolonged Exposure (PE) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Habit Reversal Training (HRT).

My clinical and research expertise is in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and other anxiety-based disorders in adults and children (click here to learn more). I specialize in helping survivors of rape, abuse, accidents, acute trauma, and complex trauma recover and develop self-awareness and self-compassion (click here to learn more).

In addition to being a therapist, I am also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist with expertise in neuropsychological, psychoeducational, and diagnostic assessment from early childhood through adulthood. I am especially passionate regarding the evaluation of complex psychological and conditions such as ADHD, autism, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), as well as giftedness and specific learning differences. I have developed skill in differential diagnosis, particularly with more complex conditions such as trauma-related and nuanced neurodevelopmental presentations that often remain undetected (read more here). I believe that the connection between practitioner and client is uniquely delicate and imperative for success in the therapy room. My approach is designed to meet children and teens at their stage of development and learning style, allowing them to grow their skills in ways that fit their cognitive patterns.

I am fully remote. Doing therapy remotely has many advantages. I can reach clients if they are having difficulty finding an expert in their area, live far away, have transportation difficulties, are chronically ill, and who would like to include family members or others in treatment. It is particularly effective to conduct ERP for OCD remotely, as we are able to develop exposures that are right in your world (e.g., your house, your car, your town, etc.).

Finding the right therapist is an important first step for all potential clients. To assist in making this decision, I conduct a free 15-minute consultation with all new clients so that we can get to know each other and determine if we are a good fit. I welcome your interest. Please contact me via email (fairfieldtherapy@gmail.com) or text (203-533-1252) to schedule our initial consultation.

Insurance

I do not contract with insurance companies as an in-network provider. I provide documentation in a “ready-to-go” format that individuals may choose to submit to insurance companies for out-of-network reimbursement.
